The Hope of Learning

Alice came to the United States two years ago as a Chinese immigrant. In order to quickly adjust and improve her English, she started taking adult ESL classes at both Pui Tak Center and another program.

However, she soon found that even though the other program taught at a higher level, she actually learned more English skills through Pui Tak Center. The teachers were more dynamic, cared about the students as individuals and made Alice feel welcome beyond the classroom. When she has a question about vocabulary, her ESL teacher didn’t mind a text from Alice.

As a person who used to dislike reading, Alice has since come around and finds herself picking up English books to read. Her teacher has encouraged her whole class to read and helps them select books that suited her level more.

When she was introduced to the Hope Class when it started earlier this year, she immediately jumped on the chance to learn more. Hope Class teaches English through biblical stories. The class is going through the heroes of faith in the Bible. Alice finds that her reading is improving and is often touched by the stories including a recent story of the midwives of Egypt and the parents of Moses.

After two years, Alice is now able to express herself in English and even comprehend workshops given in English. Praise the Lord for opportunities that allows Pui Tak Center to share the gospel with the immigrant community.
